StepSmash supports syncing activity data directly from your Oura Ring. Once linked, your steps, distance, and Active Zone Minutes from Oura count toward your StepSmash games.
How It Works
The Oura integration connects directly to your Oura account, with no Apple Health or Health Connect middleman required. When your ring syncs to the Oura app, that data flows to Oura’s servers, and StepSmash picks it up automatically from there.
Linking Your Oura Account
- Open StepSmash and go to Settings → Fitness Accounts.
- Tap Oura.
- You’ll be taken to Oura’s sign-in screen. Log in with your Oura account.
- Review and approve the permissions StepSmash requests.
- Return to StepSmash. Your data will begin importing automatically.
Permissions Requested
When you connect, StepSmash requests three permissions from your Oura account:
| Permission | What it’s used for |
|---|---|
| Personal info | Your Oura account identity and age. Account identity links Oura’s data updates to your StepSmash profile. Age is used to compute your personal heart rate zones for Active Zone Minutes. |
| Daily activity and sleep | Your daily steps and distance, used for game tiles. Sleep data provides your nightly resting heart rate, which is used alongside your age to compute accurate heart rate zones. We do not use sleep stages, readiness scores, or any other sleep information. |
| Heart rate | Per-minute heart rate readings recorded by your ring throughout the day, used to calculate Active Zone Minutes. |
How Data Sync Works
Your ring syncs to the Oura app throughout the day. When Oura processes your ring’s data, StepSmash receives a notification and pulls the update automatically. You don’t need to open StepSmash to trigger a sync. It can take 30 seconds or more after your ring syncs to the Oura app before Oura notifies StepSmash that there’s new data to pull.
When you first connect, StepSmash imports your recent activity history to personalize your game targets from day one.
You can check when StepSmash last received data from Oura under Settings → Fitness Accounts. If you recently synced your Oura Ring to the Oura app and you don’t see the latest data in StepSmash just tap Sync Now and StepSmash will fetch the latest data from your Oura account.
How StepSmash Counts Your Steps
Oura gives StepSmash your steps as a single daily total. We developed a clever way to break that total down into an hour-by-hour timeline before applying it to your StepSmash games.
StepSmash requires steps, and other activity types, in a timeline format because challenges start and end at midnight in the game creator’s timezone, and some game types like Bingo Blitz use randomized start times that fall at different points during the day. To make sure only the steps you took during your challenge window count toward your score, StepSmash needs to know when those steps happened, not just how many you took overall.
Your overall daily step count in StepSmash will still match your step count in the Oura app, we’ve just added a layer on top to make the data work for StepSmash.
Active Zone Minutes
StepSmash calculates Active Zone Minutes from the heart rate your ring records throughout the day. Your age (pulled from your Oura profile at connect time) and nightly resting heart rate define your personal heart rate zones. Time spent at moderate intensity or above earns Active Zone Minutes.
For a detailed explanation of how the calculation works, see How Active Minutes Work in StepSmash.
Smash Bingo Activity Mapping
| Smash Bingo Tile | Oura Data Source | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Steps | Daily step totals | Pulled from your Oura daily activity. |
| Active Minutes | Continuous heart rate | Calculated from your ring’s per-minute heart rate readings and your personal zones. |
| Distance | Daily walking distance | Pulled from your Oura daily activity. Displayed in miles or kilometers based on your StepSmash settings. |
Troubleshooting
Data isn’t updating in StepSmash
- Open the Oura app and confirm today’s activity is showing there. If the Oura app doesn’t have fresh data, StepSmash won’t either.
- Check the Last Sync time under Settings → Fitness Accounts. If it looks stale, tap Sync to request an update.
- If the Oura app shows your data but StepSmash still doesn’t, try disconnecting and reconnecting your Oura account.
Active Zone Minutes showing zero
- Verify your ring is recording heart rate during the day, not just overnight. If your ring isn’t worn or the sensor is obstructed, heart rate data may be missing.
- Make sure the Oura app has synced recently. AZM is calculated from heart rate data your ring has already sent to Oura’s servers.
Steps or distance don’t match what the Oura app shows
- Tap Sync under Settings → Fitness Accounts to pull the latest data.
- If the discrepancy persists, disconnect and reconnect your Oura account to trigger a fresh data import.
Connection fails or you’re redirected back to Oura’s login unexpectedly
- Make sure you’re signing in with the same Oura account your ring is paired to.
- Confirm you approved all permissions on the Oura authorization screen. Declining any permission will prevent the connection from completing.
Disconnecting Oura
Go to Settings → Fitness Accounts, tap your Oura account, and select Disconnect. This stops syncing your activity data for future games.
