How Active Minutes Work in StepSmash
Active Minutes measure time spent doing physical activity that elevates your heart rate or gets you moving at a sustained pace. This guide explains how StepSmash calculates Active Minutes across all supported fitness platforms.
What Are Active Minutes?
Active Minutes reward you for the quality of your activity, not just the quantity. Walking 10,000 steps spread throughout a sedentary day is good, but a 30-minute brisk walk that gets your heart pumping is even better for your health.
Where possible, StepSmash syncs the most analogous metric directly from your fitness platform:
- Fitbit provides Active Zone Minutes natively
- Apple Watch provides Exercise Time
- Samsung Health provides Active Minutes
For platforms that don’t provide an equivalent metric (like Garmin or Health Connect), StepSmash calculates Active Minutes from your data. When heart rate data is available, we use the same algorithm that Fitbit developed for Active Zone Minutes. When heart rate isn’t available, we fall back to step-based activity detection.
This approach ensures all StepSmash players have access to Active Minutes games, regardless of which fitness tracker they use.
Why We Calculate It This Way
We chose to use this heart rate zone algorithm because it aligns with recommendations from the American Heart Association. The AHA distinguishes between moderate-intensity and vigorous-intensity aerobic activity, with vigorous activity providing greater cardiovascular benefit per minute.
Our algorithm reflects this by awarding:
- 1 Active Minute for each minute of moderate-intensity activity
- 2 Active Minutes for each minute of vigorous-intensity activity
This rewards players for pushing themselves while still counting all meaningful activity.
How Active Minutes Are Calculated
StepSmash uses three methods to calculate Active Minutes, depending on what data is available from your fitness tracker.
Method 1: Native Metrics (Platform-Specific)
Some fitness platforms track activity intensity natively using their own algorithms. When available, StepSmash syncs these metrics directly:
Fitbit Active Zone Minutes
- Synced directly from Fitbit’s API
- Includes zone breakdown (Fat Burn, Cardio, Peak)
Apple Watch Exercise Time
- Uses Apple’s algorithms combining heart rate, movement, and workout detection
- Each Exercise Minute = 1 Active Minute in StepSmash
Samsung Health Active Minutes
- Synced directly from Samsung Health
- Based on Samsung’s activity detection algorithms
Method 2: Heart Rate-Based Calculation
When native metrics aren’t available but heart rate data is, StepSmash calculates Active Minutes using heart rate zones based on your Heart Rate Reserve (HRR).
Heart Rate Reserve = Max Heart Rate - Resting Heart Rate
Max Heart Rate = 220 - Your Age
For example, if you’re 35 years old with a resting heart rate of 60 BPM:
- Max HR = 220 - 35 = 185 BPM
- HR Reserve = 185 - 60 = 125 BPM
Heart Rate Zones
| Zone | % of HR Reserve | How It Feels | Active Minutes Earned |
|---|---|---|---|
| Below Zone | < 40% | Light activity, easy breathing | 0 per minute |
| Moderate (Fat Burn) | 40-59% | Comfortable pace, can hold a conversation | 1 per minute |
| Vigorous (Cardio) | 60-84% | Challenging, breathing harder | 2 per minute |
| Peak | 85%+ | Maximum effort, can only say a few words | 2 per minute |
Zone Calculation Example (Age 35, Resting HR 60):
| Zone | Calculation | Heart Rate Range |
|---|---|---|
| Moderate starts | 60 + (125 × 0.40) | 110 BPM |
| Vigorous starts | 60 + (125 × 0.60) | 135 BPM |
| Peak starts | 60 + (125 × 0.85) | 166 BPM |
This means during a workout:
- HR of 100 BPM = below zone, 0 Active Minutes
- HR of 120 BPM = moderate zone, 1 Active Minute per minute
- HR of 150 BPM = vigorous zone, 2 Active Minutes per minute
- HR of 170 BPM = peak zone, 2 Active Minutes per minute
Why Resting Heart Rate Matters
If StepSmash knows your resting heart rate (synced from your fitness device), your zones are personalized to your fitness level. A well-trained athlete with a resting HR of 50 will have different zones than someone with a resting HR of 75.
If resting heart rate isn’t available, StepSmash estimates it from your heart rate data or uses a default value of 60 BPM.
Method 3: Step-Based Detection (Fallback)
When neither native metrics nor heart rate data is available, StepSmash can estimate Active Minutes from your step patterns. This works when you carry your phone during activities.
How it works:
- StepSmash analyzes your steps per minute (cadence) throughout the day
- Sustained periods of elevated cadence indicate active movement
- Activity must last at least 6 consecutive minutes to qualify as an “activity bout”
- Each minute in a qualifying bout earns 1 Active Minute
Cadence Thresholds:
- Entry threshold: ~100+ steps per minute indicates you’ve started an active period
- Exit threshold: ~85 steps per minute or below ends the active period
This method is less precise than heart rate but ensures everyone can participate in Active Minutes games, even without a heart rate monitor.
Active Minutes by Platform
| Platform | Primary Method | Fallback Method | Requirements |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fitbit | Native Active Zone Minutes | N/A | Fitbit account linked |
| Apple Watch | Native Exercise Time | N/A | Apple Health linked |
| Samsung Health | Native Active Minutes | N/A | Samsung Health linked |
| Garmin | Heart rate calculation | Motion-based from epochs | Age set in StepSmash |
| Apple Health (no Watch) | Heart rate calculation | Step-based detection | Age set in StepSmash |
| Health Connect | Heart rate calculation | Step-based detection | Age set in StepSmash |
Setting Your Age
For heart rate-based Active Minutes calculation, StepSmash needs your age to determine your maximum heart rate.
To set or update your age:
- Go to Settings → Profile
- Enter your date of birth or age
You’ll also be prompted to enter your age when connecting a fitness account that requires it.
Your age is only used for heart rate zone calculations and is never shared publicly.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why are my Active Minutes different from what my fitness app shows?
This depends on your integration:
-
Fitbit, Apple Watch, Samsung Health: Your Active Minutes should closely match what you see in those apps since we sync the native metric directly.
-
Garmin: Garmin tracks “Intensity Minutes” but doesn’t provide this data in a timeline format. Since StepSmash games start at midnight in the host’s timezone, we need timestamped data to attribute activity correctly. StepSmash calculates Active Minutes from your heart rate data, which may produce different results.
-
Health Connect or Apple Health (without Apple Watch): These platforms don’t provide a native active minutes metric, so StepSmash calculates it from your heart rate or step data.
Why did I get 0 Active Minutes even though I was active?
A few possible reasons:
- Your heart rate didn’t reach the moderate zone (40% of HR reserve)
- Step-based activity didn’t last 6+ consecutive minutes
- Your age isn’t set in StepSmash (required for HR zone calculation)
- Heart rate data didn’t sync from your device
Why did I get 2 Active Minutes for 1 minute of activity?
When your heart rate reaches the Vigorous or Peak zone (60%+ of HR reserve), you earn 2 Active Minutes per minute of activity. This rewards higher-intensity exercise.
Can I earn Active Minutes without a fitness tracker?
Yes! If you carry your iPhone or Android phone during activities, StepSmash can detect Active Minutes from your step patterns. You’ll need sustained activity of at least 6 minutes.
How often do Active Minutes sync?
This depends on your fitness platform:
- Fitbit: Near real-time via webhooks
- Garmin: When your device syncs to Garmin Connect
- Apple Health: When you open StepSmash or via background refresh
- Health Connect: When you open StepSmash or via background sync
- Samsung Health: When you open StepSmash
Do calories or workout type matter?
No. StepSmash only looks at heart rate (or step cadence) to determine Active Minutes. The type of workout and calories burned don’t affect the calculation.
