StepSmash Google Health Integration
StepSmash supports syncing your activity data directly from Google Health. Once linked, your steps, distance, and Active Zone Minutes can be used in StepSmash games.
Moving from Fitbit? Google is moving Fitbit app connections to its newer Google Health platform. If you previously connected Fitbit, StepSmash will prompt you to Update connection. This links Google Health in place of Fitbit while keeping your existing StepSmash history and game progress.
Google Health and Health Connect are different integrations. Google Health is the cloud-based Google account connection used for Fitbit data. Health Connect is the on-device Android health data hub. If you track with a Fitbit, Google Health is the one you want. If you use an Android phone with another app or wearable, see the Health Connect FAQ.
Linking Your Google Health Account
To connect Google Health to StepSmash:
- Open StepSmash and go to Settings → Fitness Accounts.
- Select Google Health.
- Sign in with your Google account.
- Approve the permissions request so StepSmash can read your activity data.
Once your account is linked, StepSmash will automatically handle data syncing. No manual exports or file uploads are required.
Permissions Requested
When you link Google Health, StepSmash requests only the minimum permission needed to power the games:
- Activity and fitness - to read your daily steps, distance, and Active Zone Minutes.
StepSmash only reads this data. We do not request permission to write data, and we do not request sensitive categories such as sleep, nutrition, or location.
Switching from Fitbit
Google is moving Fitbit app connections to the newer Google Health integration. If you previously connected Fitbit, you may see a Fitbit connection update card in StepSmash.
To switch:
- Tap Update connection.
- Sign in with the Google account connected to your Fitbit.
- Approve the requested permission.
Your Fitbit device keeps working the same way it does today. The only change is that your Fitbit data reaches StepSmash through Google Health instead of the older Fitbit connection.
Your StepSmash history and current game progress will stay in place. Once the switch completes, StepSmash will remove the old Fitbit connection automatically.
Data Sync Frequency
- Google Health pushes updated activity data to StepSmash automatically when new data becomes available in your Google account.
- When you first connect, StepSmash imports your recent activity history so Bingo tile targets can be personalized from day one.
- You can trigger a manual sync any time from Settings → Fitness Accounts.
- StepSmash only sees data after your Fitbit or other source has synced it to your Google Health account.
You can always check the last sync time in StepSmash under your Google Health account status.
Tip: If your Fitbit has not synced recently, tapping Sync now in StepSmash may not change anything. Open the Fitbit app first, make sure your device has synced, then try syncing again in StepSmash.
Active Zone Minutes (AZM) Support
Active Zone Minutes (AZM) Support
Google Health provides Active Zone Minutes directly for supported Fitbit devices. StepSmash maps those minutes to Active Time for StepSmash games, so there is nothing extra to set up.
For legacy Fitbit devices that do not support Active Zone Minutes, StepSmash will sync Moderate + Vigorous Active Minutes from your Google Health account instead.
Google Health is brand new and, for the first time, supports third-party devices. We are still waiting to see how Google Health handles active time from third-party trackers. Support for syncing third-party trackers into Google Health is not widely available yet, and we have not had an opportunity to test this functionality.
If you are using a third-party tracker, we strongly recommend using the direct integration in StepSmash if one is available. Otherwise, we recommend syncing through Apple Health or Health Connect instead.
Smash Bingo Activity Mapping
Smash Bingo boards use different activity types, all of which are mapped from Google Health metrics:
| Smash Bingo Tile Type | Google Health Data Source | Details |
|---|---|---|
| Steps | Step count | Pulled from your Google Health step totals. |
| Active Minutes | Active Zone Minutes | Uses Google Health Active Zone Minutes. |
| Distance | Distance walked or run | Pulled from Google Health distance data, displayed in miles or kilometers depending on your system settings. |
Each player’s tiles are personalized to their activity history, ensuring fairness no matter how active you are.
Troubleshooting
Data Not Syncing
- Make sure your Fitbit or other source device has synced recently.
- Check that Google Health is still linked in Settings → Fitness Accounts.
- Tap Sync now from your Google Health account screen.
- If it looks connected but data is missing, try disconnecting and reconnecting Google Health.
- Verify your Last Sync time to see when StepSmash last received data.
Just Switched from Fitbit and Missing Recent Data
- Give it a few minutes. StepSmash syncs your recent activity after the connection update completes.
- Make sure your Fitbit device has synced to your Google account recently.
- Open the Fitbit app and confirm your latest steps appear there first.
- If recent activity still looks off, tap Sync now in Settings → Fitness Accounts.
AZM Showing Zero
- Confirm your Fitbit or other device is recording heart rate.
- Make sure Active Zone Minutes appear in your Google account.
- Check that your device has synced recently.
- Active Zone Minutes only accrue when your heart rate reaches the required activity zones.
Couldn’t Connect
- Make sure you complete the Google sign-in flow.
- Confirm that you approved the activity and fitness permission.
- If the browser does not return you to StepSmash automatically, reopen StepSmash and check Settings → Fitness Accounts.
- If you previously declined the permission, try connecting again and approve the request.
Disconnect Your Account
To disconnect Google Health from StepSmash:
- Go to Settings → Fitness Accounts.
- Tap your connected Google Health account.
- Tap Disconnect.
Disconnecting stops Google Health activity data from syncing to StepSmash.
