Garmin data not transferring fully since the new challenges

I have noticed that not all my steps and distance are transferring from Garmin now that I have the new challenges.

It seems as though only my tracked activity data is transferring.

So if I don’t actually track activities then my steps and distance don’t seem to be counting.

If you look at the daily bingo board today in my pic - you can see that my distance is showing the 1.5 mi from my activities from Garmin in my pic - however in untracked activities I have 14mi and I have 18k steps - but only about 3500 from my activities are showing.

This is very strange!

We’re seeing a gap in your data on our end, and after sending Garmin’s systems a request for that time range we did not receive anything. I’m reaching out to our developer support contact over there to see what might be going on.

Very odd

Maybe it’s a Garmin issue…

I also un selected the three options for data sharing and reselected them at one point when I was seeing if that would help with the syncing so maybe was a glitch from that as well.

Although when I was looking, the data had transferred to another app I also use which is why I assumed it was on the StepSmash side. But maybe there’s a different kind of transmission in use for that app.

Let me know if I need to do anything or reach out to Garmin.

Thanks for checking. I will watch today to see if my steps transfer and let you know.

Garmin handles all-day background steps and recorded activities through separate sync endpoints, which is why manual activities can still appear even when general daily step totals fail to push. While developer support investigates the backend sync, a quick workaround to try is disconnecting and reconnecting StepSmash inside Garmin Connect under Connected Apps / Partner Apps, followed by a manual sync in the Garmin Connect app. Until that sync path is restored, tracking daily walks as standard activities should ensure those steps count toward your challenges.

Garmin’s developer support got back to me over the weekend and confirmed that it was a Garmin issue. They shared a screenshot of an internal debugging tool they have that showed your watch, for whatever reason, failed to write out the intra-day data that StepSmash uses for bingo and step challenges. So it sounds like it was a fluke on their end.

Most apps are likely using the daily aggregate totals, but we have folks competing together from various timezones, so we need the intra-day data so that we can align data against the start time of each challenge, regardless of which timezone it was started in.

I suspect this issue is not common but we’ll be filing an internal ticket to track some work around detecting any other instances where this happens. If we see it happening often enough we can develop a fallback on the daily totals.

At least we know the root cause, even if there’s not an immediate happy solution here. If you’re trying to keep a streak for Daily Bingo and that issue caused you to miss it last week I can comp the day you missed to keep the streak active. Just let me know!
