Finding and Adding Friends in StepSmash
StepSmash is more fun with friends! Here’s everything you need to know about finding people you know and growing your friends list.
Accessing the Friends Screen
Tap the Friends tab at the bottom of your screen. This is your hub for searching, adding, and managing all your StepSmash connections.
Method 1: Search by Name or Email
The quickest way to find someone already on StepSmash:
- Go to the Friends tab
- Tap the search box labeled “Add friends by name or email”
- Type at least 3 characters of their name or email address
- Browse the search results that appear
- Tap the + button next to anyone you’d like to add
A friend request will be sent to that person. They’ll need to accept before you become friends.
Can’t find someone?
If your search comes up empty, there are a few possibilities:
- They haven’t joined StepSmash yet (try inviting them!)
- They may have adjusted their privacy settings to limit who can find them in search. In this case, ask them to search for you and send you a friend request instead.
Method 2: Tap on Players Inside Games
See someone in a game you’d like to connect with? You can send them a friend request directly:
- While viewing a game’s leaderboard, activity feed, or player list, tap on their profile photo
- You’ll be taken to their profile page
- Tap Add Friend to send them a request
This is a great way to connect with new people you meet through public games or shared challenges.
Method 3: Invite Someone via Email
If you search for a valid email address that doesn’t belong to an existing StepSmash user, you’ll see the option to Invite via Email.
- Type your friend’s email address in the search box
- Tap Send Invite
- They’ll receive an email inviting them to download StepSmash
Once they join, you can search for them and send a friend request.
Method 4: Share an Invite Link
Want to spread the word more broadly? Use the share button:
- Go to the Friends tab
- Tap the Invite friends button (with the share icon)
- Choose how you’d like to share: Messages, WhatsApp, social media, etc.
- Your friends will receive a link to download StepSmash
This is perfect for posting in group chats or sharing with multiple people at once.
Managing Friend Requests
When someone sends you a friend request, or you’ve sent one yourself, they’ll appear in dedicated sections at the top of your Friends screen.
Pending Requests (requests you’ve received)
- Tap the ✓ checkmark to accept
- Tap the ✗ to decline
Sent Requests (requests you’ve sent)
- These show as “Pending” while waiting for a response
- Once accepted, they’ll move to your friends list
Viewing a Friend’s Profile
Tap on any friend in your list to view their profile. From there, you can see their badges and achievements.
Privacy: Who Can Find You?
If you’d prefer to limit who can discover your account, you can adjust your discoverability settings:
- Go to Settings → Privacy
- Under Discoverability, choose:
- Searchable by everyone: Anyone on StepSmash can find you
- Friends of friends: Only people connected to your existing friends can find you in search
If you’ve restricted your discoverability and a friend can’t find you, simply search for them and send the friend request yourself.
Inviting Friends to Games
Once you’ve built your friends list, you can invite them to join your private games:
- Open a game you’ve joined
- Look for the Invite option
- Select the friends you’d like to invite
- Tap Send Invitations
Your friends will receive a notification and can accept to join the game.
Tips for Building Your Network
- Join public games: Meet new people and tap their profile to send friend requests to players you enjoy competing with
- Be responsive: Accept friend requests promptly so you can start playing together
- Share the app: Use the invite link to bring friends and family into StepSmash
